Amelia Jenks Bloomer and the Bloomer Costume

Amelia Jenks Bloomer was a women’s rights activist who lived from 1818 to 1894. Bloomer thought it was unfair that women were expected to wear the uncomfortable clothes of the mid-1800s. At that time women wore heavy, floor-length dresses over many underskirts. They also wore tight corsets around their waists and rib cages to make themselves look thinner. Corsets made moving and breathing difficult.

Bloomer began the style of wearing loose pants under a knee-length skirt. This outfit was called the Bloomer costume. When wearing the Bloomer costume, women could climb trees and ride bicycles. Women stopped wearing the Bloomer costume by the mid-1850s.
